Fiji vacations range from honeymoons on a secluded beach, adventures in remote tropical mountains, scuba diving in colourful coral reefs and package holidays for short breaks and families. Fiji is the South Pacific'c number 1 destination with almost 100 resorts and hotels to choose from. Although there are over 300 islands in all, the main groups are mostly compact, with most islands visible from its neighbours, and getting from island to island is generally very easy. Deciding which island to visit for your Fiji vacation, and how long to spend there can be hard. Nadi Airport is located on the west coast of Viti Levu, the main island in Fiji. Here there are over a dozen medium size hotels and motels along the main inland road and several budget resorts along the mediocre beach setting on Nadi Bay. The large international hotel chains including three Sheraton Resorts, a Sofitel and a Hilton are found on Denarau Island which is connected to Viti Levu by a land-bridge just 20 minutes drive from the airport. Denarau boasts a championship golf course, tennis courts, marina (day trips to the offshore islands) and lots of upmarket restaurants and boutique shops. Unfortunately the beach and lagoon on Denarau are not as attractive as those found on the offshore Mamanuca Islands, but Denarau is more focused on its convenient resort lifestyle. Offshore from Nadi is the wonderful Mamanuca Islands which are just 30 to 60 minutes by fast sea transfer from Denarau Marina. This is the most popular commercial resort destination in Fiji with lots of small and medium size holiday resorts alongside lovely white sand beaches with turquoise lagoons. Swimming and snorkelling is good, scuba diving is excellent and there are lots of motorized water activities and sailing trips to keep you busy. Most resorts are on an island to itself which may be too restrictive to those who like exploring or dining out. Expect to pay a premium at these resorts compared to those on the main island. If you've ever considered an Overnight Cruise, the Mamanucas and the more remote Yasawa Islands are the premier destination in the South Pacific. Three- and seven-day cruises are offered by Blue Lagoon Cruises and Captain Cook Cruises and visit some of the country's most beautiful secluded beaches and remote fishing villages. The Coral Coast, an hour plus drive to the south of Nadi Airport offers more affordable accommodation. There are a handful of large beach hotels including Outrigger and the family-orientated Naviti as well as smaller beach resorts like Hideaway and Tambua Sands. The Coral Coast resorts are popular with Australian and New Zealand package holiday-makers and are ideal for those on a family holiday or for those who like to take sightseeing trips to explore the fantastic tropical rainforest and coastal scenery. Beyond the Coral Coast, almost 4 hours by road from Nadi Airport, is the capital Suva City with its business hotels, cosmopolitan shopping and nightlife and access to some of the best and most remote rainforest in the country. For those looking to escape the more commercial aspects of Fiji, a trip to one of the many Outer Islands is a worthwhile experience. There are lots of small intimate resorts scattered around the group, including several highly exclusive resorts that are often frequented by Hollywood Stars and other high-profile personalities. These outer island resorts are usually in stunning secluded locations are great for those looking for a pampered holiday, a wedding or honeymoon, for scuba diving and surfing enthusiasts or for those looking to experience the traditional side of Fiji. The only downside is the time additional cost it takes to get to these more remote locations. Depending on the destination and time of international arrival / departure, a lay over in Nadi for a night is often required for connecting flights to these outer islands - flights on small twin engine aircraft can take from 40-minutes to 1 hour and 20-minutes and excess baggage fees over 15Kg may apply. Fiji's climate is hot and sunny all year round (day/night average temperature is Jan 24/30; July 20/27) with higher rainfall and more mosquitoes from Dec to April. The are several peaks in the tourist season, notably from July to September when the package holidays are popular with Australians and New Zealanders escaping their winter. However, hotel rates remain the same throughout the year. Internal flights to the outer islands are often more difficult to get during Christmas when locals return home for their holidays. Most international flights to Fiji arrive at Nadi Airport on the west coast of Viti Levu. Fiji is served by several international airlines, the major airlines being Air New Zealand and Air Pacific (code share with Qantas). Some flights (mostly from neighbouring Pacific Islands and some Australian and New Zealand flights) arrive in Nausori Airport about 20 minutes drive to the north of the capital Suva - the choice usually for business visitors. It is possible to arrive by sea at one of four immigration ports - Suva, Lautoka, Levuka or Savusavu - either by private yacht or aboard large passenger cruises. English is widely spoken although there are numerous Fijian dialects with the Indians speaking a localised form of Urdu. Electricity is 240 volts. The water is safe to drink although bottle water is readily available from the shops. Health hazards include the occasional Dengue outbreak when mosquitoes breed heavily after heavy rains and flooding (Dec to April).
